Oak herringbone flooring: planning the look and layout
Take inspiration from our Kensington herringbone installation and plan the details before fitting.

See the pattern in a finished space
Our main website features Kensington Oak Herringbone Natural Brushed Oiled, identified as OWT-20 in the Our Work collection. The installation photographs help illustrate the repeated pattern across a finished area. They are particularly useful when a small sample does not give you a sense of how the layout will read across a room.
Agree the layout before fitting
Discuss the direction of the pattern, the starting line and its relationship to doorways with your installer. Consider whether the floor will continue into adjoining spaces and whether you want a border. These are design decisions to make before installation rather than after the first rows have been laid.
Check the whole specification
Compare block dimensions, finish and grade when considering different herringbone options. Similar colours can produce a different effect when the block size changes. Confirm the fitting method and subfloor preparation required for the exact product. Do not assume that instructions for a straight-plank floor apply unchanged to a patterned installation.
Allow for cuts and complete the order
Ask your fitter to calculate the quantity, including the allowance needed for the chosen layout and room shape. Review adhesive or underlay requirements, thresholds and other finishing details at the same time. Use the current product page for prices and pack coverage, and our customer photo page for inspiration rather than as an installation instruction.
